My opinion matters

Diving deep into the Liverpool culture and more importantly its creative, expressive and bold individuals is one of the highlights for me of the past couple years of discovering insights. Over the course of 6 months, we followed 4 consumers that eventually helped to create, inspire and feed the Spring/Summer 2021 line for Reebok Meet You There (MYT).

One of these inspiring people is Tyler (22), an emerging musician and singer songwriter, better known as Sub Blue, a direct result of him growing up in the suburban area of Liverpool. Throughout the 6 months we got to see him evolve, grow, listening to his songs on rotation in the Amsterdam office.

“The name Sub Blue, comes from my self described genre of music ‘Suburban Blue’s’.”

“The Scene for R&B and hip hop is slowly growing within the city, with more of the populous platforms starting to take notice of us as artists.”

Growing up in a city that is mostly known for its pop/rock music, Tyler is keeping it close to home and creating music that he loves himself. With his favorite artists such as Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and A$ap Rocky, Sub Blue exposes his inner feelings, things he sees and experiences, is critical about current society all balanced and mixed with his love for streetwear. He even has a song called ‘Hype Like Supreme’, singing about how getting that girl is almost as difficult as buying a Supreme box logo hoodie.

Tyler has already been lucky enough to have spent time in LA recording music with Island Records, which made him hungry for more. His future goal is move there and record his debut album, but for now he’s currently working on getting his degree from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. The biggest transition he is going through right now is from being a student to a working man.

During the project for Reebok Tyler tells us he learnt a lot.

“I think listening to everyone else’s fashion advice and their visions, taking those onboard to develop cool ideas was my biggest learning moment. I think it really made me re-think about my own style and how I can change certain things.”

For him as a streetwear and sneaker lover it was a dream come true, being able to design and work on a collection.

“I’ve been massively into fashion from a young age and always been inspired by people such as Kanye West, Dennis Rodman, Jerry Lorenzo and Virgil Abloh, so when I finally found out an item I designed was going to be released it really changed my perspective and just made me realise that my dreams being involved in fashion weren’t so far away. The part I enjoyed the most was being able to be hands on with the fabrics and the designs and also having the opportunity to design some garments myself.”

But being able to express his opinion and a brand listening to it and taking it on was what he loved most.

“The most memorable part was meeting new people and having the opportunity to tell my story to the people at Reebok.”

Any advice you would give your younger self:

“Don’t fear the unknown, take risks.”
